Argentinian Sculptor Turns Pandemic Waste into Art
BUENOS AIRES- Marcelo Toledo often creates sculptures and jewellery out of metal. On this occasion, however, the Argentinian artist is using a replacement material: waste masks and syringes from the COVID-19 pandemic to make an exhibition exploring the agonizing effects of the virus. Argentina was a delicate socio-economic state even before the COVID-19 catastrophe hit. The Argentinean government is habitually applying an all-inclusive approach in response to the Covid-19.
Toledo started his new exhibition, called “Museum of the After,” and features newspaper trimmings about the disease, medical parts, old vaccines, and numerous others. His artwork outlooks on exhibition by this September at a public space in center Buenos Aires. The chief objective of the painter is to present the pain into beauty.
Toledo, who has designed ornaments for the musical “Evita”, also known personalities such as Barack Obama and Madonna, was one of the first in Argentina who had to deal with COVID-19 a year ago, the virus hospitalized him for approximately eight days. This event left a mark on his life and sparked a burst of creativity. A 14-meter mask with the Argentine flag was one of the artworks that he consigned on the famous Obelisk in Buenos Aires to increase awareness about organ donation during the pandemic.
“I am excited to be able to transform pain into beauty and this exhibition is just that, capturing everything that is happening to us as a society,” Toledo, 45, stated in his conference about the Reuters at the San Telmo area of Buenos Aires.
The artworks will move on to an exhibition from September in a public space in downtown Buenos Aires. The artist said that it is his first time that he doesn’t have to buy any new materials for his artworks. In the exposition, a ship will allegorically cross a “storm” and renewing islets to raise awareness nearby the importance of concern for the environment.
The entire exhibition will disclose the actual story of this ship that left sailing and was stuck later in the storm, which is an additional allegory for what is going to happen to us. This pandemic is a huge universal hurricane according to Toledo.
